about

This song was first written and recorded by Mississippi John Hurt and was titled "Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me". Apparently, it was based on Jimmie Rodgers’ song "Waiting On A Train". The original is VERY different from our version, but we hope you'll take the time to seek out not only this song by Mississippi John Hurt, but other recordings by this legendary artist. John's recording of this song can be easily found on YouTube and is an absolutely beautiful song. Please give it a listen.

Although John passed away a long time ago, we'd like to think that if he were alive today, he would get a kick out of our version of his song. We hope you will too.

With love and beer,

Metolius Monk

lyrics

Blues all over the ocean, blues all in the air.
I can't stay here no longer, I have no steamship fare.
When my earthly trials are over, cast my body out in the sea.
Save on the undertaker bill, let the mermaids flirt with me.

I do not work for pleasure, earthly peace I'll see no more.
The only reason I work at all is drive the world from my door.
When my earthly trials are over, cast my body out in the sea.
Save on the undertaker bill, let the mermaids flirt with me.

My wife controls our happy home, a sweetheart I cannot find.
The only thing I can call my own is a troubled and a worried mind.
When my earthly trials are over, cast my body out in the sea.
Save all on undertaker bill, let the mermaids flirt with me.

Blues all in my body, my darling has forsaken me.
If I ever see her face again, I will travel across the sea.
When my earthly trials are over, cast my body out in the sea.
Save all on undertaker bill, let the mermaids flirt with me.

Blues all on the ocean, blues all in the air.
I can't stay here no longer, I have no steamship fare.
When my earthly trials are over, cast my body out in the sea.
Save on the undertaker bill, let the mermaids flirt with me.
